Beautiful vintage stoneware tea-for-one teapot featuring a wonderfully earthy brown, caramel and cream glaze and a woven rattan handle.
What makes this piece especially charming is its clever design—the matching stoneware tea cup fits upside down into the top of the teapot and doubles as the lid. When you’re ready for tea, simply remove the cup and pour.
The teapot has a substantial hand-crafted appearance with horizontal throwing lines, a speckled and variegated glaze, and a warm organic look that works beautifully with Japanese, MCM, rustic, wabi-sabi and modern interiors.
Based on the form, construction and comparable examples, I believe this is likely Japanese and dates to approximately the 1960s–1970s, but the maker has not been positively identified.
