Folk Art Pottery Jug, Twisted Handle, Hand Thrown, Earthenware, Primitive

Wonderful and highly unusual old hand-thrown pottery vessel with a large sculptural twisted handle, rounded body, ribbed neck, broad dark brown glazed rim and an intentionally formed circular opening in the side.

The interior is unglazed terracotta and is completely hollow. There are no inserts, liners or interior tubes.

The exact original purpose, maker and country of origin are unknown. Based on its hand-thrown construction and materials, I believe it is an antique or early vintage piece, possibly dating from the late 19th to early 20th century, but the age has not been independently authenticated.

Approx. 9½” H × 7½” W

Condition:
Sold exactly as found. The vessel shows considerable age and character, including surface wear, losses to the exterior finish/paint, areas of earlier coloration showing through, and an old repair at/near the handle attachment. Please enlarge and examine all photographs carefully.

The shiny dark brown surface around the mouth appears to be a fired glaze. The remainder of the interior is exposed terracotta.

The unusual side opening appears intentional rather than a recent break; however, I have not been able to determine its original function.

No maker’s mark has been found.

A striking piece displayed as primitive pottery, folk art or a sculptural found object. I have intentionally left it in its found condition and have made no attempt to clean, strip, repaint or restore it.
